Official Development Assistance (ODA)

This dashboard allows you to explore data related to official development assistance (ODA) provided by donor countries (such as the Netherlands) to developing countries all over the world (such as Zimbabwe).

Why use YourDataStories?

YourDataStories aggregates data from various separate datasets into a common “semantic graph” in RDF. In plain English: YourDataStories connects information from different sources in one place. It enables users to access such data easily and to discover relations between data. In such a way, users can browse, search, visualize, and make sense of the aggregated data, rather than chase the original, discrete datasets which may only be accessible to experts.

YourDataStories: Modelling ODA data

YourDataStories looks at ODA broken down into individual “Aid Activities”. An Aid Activity has

  • one or more benefactor and beneficiary countries
  • a duration or date range
  • organisations involved in its implementation
  • a thematic sector (e.g., humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, water supply), and
  • a set of financial transactions (such as “Disbursement” a.k.a. actual payment, or “Commitment” a.k.a. planned payment).

A quick overview of the ODA data

The following two maps show all beneficiary (recipient) and benefactor (donor) countries available in the data, coloured according to the number of Aid Activities they have been involved in. Both maps are interactive, allowing the selection of any number and combination of beneficiary/benefactor countries.

Below the maps, a slider allows the selection of any time period within the available data.

Finally, there is a set of “info boxes” that allow you to filter for various aspects of the ODA data. Clicking on each “info box” shows predefined visualisations. Using the icons in the upper right corner of the visualisation, you can toggle between various types of infographics. The icons in the upper left corner allow you to generate an embed code to use the visualisation on another website, and to add it to your personal data collection (“basket”).

What else can I do with the available data?

The following table shows all Aid Activities for the selected benefactor and beneficiary countries that span the selected time period. You can obtain the same results through search: an example is provided on the search tab.

Each Aid Activity has a set of related transactions and sectors. In order to see them, please select an Aid Activity from the table below, and press its “View” button. The related transactions and sectors will be listed in a new page.

The following example shows how a detailed search can be performed in the YourDataStories platform, through the “Advanced Search”. The advanced search allows you to graphically create rules that filter specific properties. Auto-completion is also supported!

Select benefactor and beneficiary countries, change the time period, and see how the rules are automatically generated. Instructions on how to use Advanced Search, a guided tutorial on filtering with a specific sector, access to the full search interface.

What data is related? Trade Activities

International trade activities describe the trade activities among countries.

In the following map you can see the trade relations between the Netherlands, and the rest of the world:
